Registration vs. Screening — What’s the Difference?

Screening and registration serve different purposes within the ILR database.Registration is used when both the sire and dam are known and properly documented. It records a camelid’s pedigree, ownership history, and eligibility for ILR programs. To be registered as a llama or alpaca, both the sire and dam must already be registered or screened according to ILR requirements.

Screening is used when a llama or alpaca’s parentage is unknown, incomplete, or unverified. Through screening, the ILR evaluates the animal’s physical characteristics and identity using veterinary documentation, DNA testing, microchip identification, and photographs. This process allows the registry to confirm that the animal meets ILR standards as a llama or alpaca, even without two registered parents.

Llamas or alpacas that successfully complete screening are designated Class S. This designation allows owners to responsibly enter animals of undocumented lineage into the registry while ensuring they meet phenotypic requirements. Offspring of screened llamas and alpacas are eligible for registration.

To screen your lama, submit the following information to the International Lama Registry (ILR) with a request for screening and the appropriate fees. Your information will be forwarded to the screening committee which at this time is comprised of the ILR Board of Directors. Allow ninety (90) days for the screening to be completed. Inaccurate information or incomplete applications may result in additional processing time.
